Calling all handymen

The war years were a great time for do-it-yourself enthusiasts – if they had the time, of course.

After all, the great challenge was to make the most of the few materials at your disposal, and some men loved rising to it.

In 1940 Batsford published 101 Things to do in Wartime, which covered toy-making, knitting projects, cookery, first aid and creating cases for gas masks, among much else. (The book was reprinted in 2007.)

One section with a Make Do and Mend theme was headed Using Up Scraps of Metal and Wood.

Here are a few of the things that could be made ‘for home use or as acceptable presents’ with the use of ‘some ingenuity and ordinary care’:

• A match-box rack. (‘Generally welcomed by the housewife.’)

• A spring for use as a paper clip.

• Corner clips for a blotting pad.

Life could be very exciting on the Home Front!
